GAGGIMATE

This project upgrades a Gaggia espresso machine (or other espresso machines equipped with a boiler and three-way-valve) with smart controls to improve your coffee-making experience. By adding a display and custom electronics, you can monitor and control the machine more easily.

PCB Build

The recommended way to build this machine is to use the PCB designed for this project. There's currently a group buy started for this: Signup Form

Lego Build

If you do not want to use the PCB you can buy the components on their own:

• ESP-S3 DevKit: AliExpress* Select N8R8
• 2/3-Channel 5V Relay: AliExpress* Select 2/3 channel depending on if you want grinder control
• MAX6675 temperature sensor board: AliExpress* Select module

Installation

The installation process of this mod consits of purely electrical changes. You will have to wire up the 3-Way valve and pump to the relays provided on the board. The existing thermostats of your machine have to be removed and bridged while connecting the heater to the SSR instead. The M4 thermistor goes into the screw hole where the brew thermostat would usually sit.

You can flash both boards directly from the browser. Click the appropriate link down below. After you've flashed them, further updates will be pulled from the GitHub releases.

Disclaimer: The Web-based flash tool and OTA update are currently built only for the suggested components. (ESP32-S3 N8R8 and LilyGo Display). This software will also run on other configurations, but you will have to adjust the platformio build and flash those via USB.
